To be prepared for APUSH in the fall of 2021:
Begin this work in July to set yourself up for success. Don't leave all of this until the week before school starts.
** All work can be submitted on paper or electronically. Please make sure you use a title that identifies the work as yours (e.g., Parnell.APUSH 4.LoewenReflection). If you have questions, please email me. Thanks and have a great summer!
- Memorize all the presidents in order, years they were in office, and a few facts about each one. I'm not talking about facts like "Taft was so fat he got stuck in the bathtub." or "Grover Cleveland was the only president in history to hold the job of a hangman." The expectation is that you will know actual relevant facts like "Grover Cleveland was the only president to be elected to two non-consecutive terms. He was the 22nd and 24th President." or "During Benjamin Harrison's term (1889-1893), six new states entered the Union." There will be a TEST on the Presidents within the first week. And yes, the grade will count.
- Memorize the location of every state on the map as well as major rivers and mountain ranges. Be able to fill in a blank outline map. There will be a TEST on basic U.S. Geography the first day of class. And yes, the grade will count.
- Read Chapters 1 and 2 of Lies my Teacher Told Me. (pp. 1-65) and complete the reflection (see files below). Due August 23, 2019.
- Watch TV. Netflix. PBS. The History Channel. There are some amazing documentaries.
- Watch any of these films (with your parent's permission): The Mission, The Patriot, The Crucible, Desperate Crossing, Last of the Mohicans, Amistad, Glory, 12 Years a Slave, Gettysburg, Lincoln, Glory, High Noon, Gone with the Wind, Hester Street, The Grapes of Wrath, Dances with Wolves, The Tuskegee Airmen, Good Morning Vietnam, Flags of our Fathers, Unforgiven, The Great Gatsby, Seabiscuit, The Right Stuff, Ghosts of Mississippi, Remember the Titans, All the President's Men, Thirteen Days, October Sky, Good Night and Good Luck, Fat Man and Little Boy, Mississippi Burning, Platoon, The Deer Hunter, Born on the 4th of July, Malcolm X, and The Insider.
- Download and listen to every single song from the musical Hamilton. It's incredibly useful for this course. You won't need this for a few weeks yet.
- Learn to love John Green. At 1.5x speed. That is all.
